And it so happened that my mom was searching for this place somewhere in Pandan Indah because "her friend asked her to check it out". We were looking for that place for two consecutive days, but to no avail. The blame game was going on in the car, dad blamed mom for wrong directions, mom blamed dad for wrong positioning of the SmartTAG thing, while Narin and I were at the back of the car, shaking our heads and imagining how sickening it was. There was a whole lot of shouting and nagging going on, and a whole lot of sighs and sweat. I was a bit worried.........
Finally, after hours of searching, we made it.
Yes, it sure was sickening to follow the map as printed from the web site of that place. The KL-Klang Valley map book was a much better guide. For a while, I wanted to ask myself whether mom and dad were hiding anything from me...... I mean, they would not want to go all the way to Pandan Indah out of the blues. I mean, like, hello, Pandan Indah and Desa Petaling are worlds apart ! Narin and I followed them in the car on the second day, again, after the mishap on the first day ; and when we found the place, we all went out and got into the complex. It was a pretty old building - I should say, about my age - with new things in it. My heart began to pound, faster by the minute.
Mom, dad and Narin probably knew what their intention was to take me. But before that, mom had the runs. We took her to the loo... and the next thing was, we had to go to that particular place.
I went into that particular place - and of all people, guess who I saw.
It was Uncle Erik !!!!! Yes, the same Uncle Erik whom mom and Narin were staring at for weeks, the same person whose drumming was marveled at by many, the same person who had a fall at his home and was hospitalised for a while. Only this time, he looked a little different : he had a chequered shirt and a cap on. I was staring at him for a moment, and wondering, is this really him ?
Oh well, so it was. Then I remembered that Uncle Erik was actually teaching there. I remembered the calling-card he handed over to mom three months ago. My heart beat even faster. They took me there by surprise. After putting all the pieces together, I began to learn what they took me there for.....................
They were going to get me a drum kit !! XD
And all this while, when I typed out my SMS draft (which I kept to myself without sending anyone) hoping to get a drum kit (preferably digital drums) for my 17th birthday, I was thinking, yeah right, like they would ever get me one. Especially with the fact that I live in an apartment, and I love banging on stuff. Maybe mom wanted to see me play ? I've no idea. But honestly, I was like, thank God !!!
While I was talking to Uncle Erik, I told him about the practice day shift, and he was like, what ? - yes, I had to pour out the entire dialogue between Uncle Raymund and Father Philip Muthu, or as I will now call him, Father Movie (he owes me a movie - probably two - after having seen my SPM results). After the long talk, I got my hand on the sticks lying down on the table, and tried the standard drums - I said to myself, oh my, this is loud. Now I began to understand why I like digital drums.
Back to Uncle Erik, I asked him how he was after the fall. He said he was getting better - only this time he had a hip guard, but he could pull through anyway. Without the hip guard, the pain would be excruciating. I managed to watch him pull off a few tricks before actually considering the thought of getting ear protection. (*chuckles*) Anyway, he sure was quite surprised to see us there........ and I was surprised to find out that he actually was based there.
When I returned home, I had one thing in mind : praise the Lord ! Things which I deemed impossible have been made real. Miracles do happen, and God has just proved it to me. And all this while, Narin was having her lips sealed. Smart ah !
The thought never crossed my mind because the night before this happened, Narin saw me tapping out a rhythm on my blue puzzle cushion. And then, Narin conjured the idea of making me a set of skins - out of tin cans. I was a bit bewildered : how could one do rimshots, cross-sticks or even double bass pedal tricks with tin cans ? I had no idea what was going on. And till this morning, I was very blur. Now, I can't help but put a wide smile on my face when I think of this moment. God made it happen in the most awesome manner. Yeah, honestly.
