First off, it is Fete de la Musique. Secondly, St Aloysius Gonzaga's feast day. Thirdly, our Choir Finals at Malaysia Tourism Centre Main Hall.
"And the champions for this year's Choir Finals are... Convent Bukit Nanas !!"
And lastly, we are champions in Wilayah Persekutuan - again !!!!!!!!
And to make things better, this is the second year CBN Grade and High have doubled as state champions for the Choir Finals. So the grade school topped all other Chinese schools - SJKC Kuen Cheng 2 (fifth place), SJKC Jalan Davidson (second place), SJKC Taman Connaught (fourth place), and SJKC Tsun Jin (third place). Over our side, the schools below our feet are SMK Wangsa Melawati (fourth place), SMK Kepong Baru (second place), Victoria Institution (third place), and SMK Sri Sentosa (fifth place).
The grade school goes to Sungai Petani, Kedah for the National Finals, while we head off to Terengganu. Our National Finals are in September, and we fifth formers probably have to do our trial examination there. Drat.
It all started with a lacklustre preparation by CBN (the high school) at about 9 in the morning, with very bad pitching, very bad coordination, etc., etc., etc. We were all beginning to sweat, and people began to look at us. So we went back in. I made full use of my cell phone to take snapshots here and there. We were among the earliest to arrive. Over the other side was the grade school CBN. There were a few "oohs" and "aahs", but that was it. We were nervous.
The grade school competitions took place first, with SJKC Kuen Cheng 2 beginning the performances. Then it was Jalan Davidson, then Tsun Jin, then CBN, then Taman Connaught. Halfway through Tsun Jin's performance, we had to rush to the dressing room. When CBN was performing, we headed out to the balcony backstage to listen. They were... breathtaking. Never before have I heard such an excellent rendition of "Dirgahayu" !! Meanwhile, it was only right when Joaan told me "ours was the only one who conducted right" - the rest of the grade schools were probably just headbopping or doing some Finding Nemo act up there. Or so people thought. No offence.
Then came the high schools. Wangsa Melawati began, then it was our turn. It was group prayer, hugs and going from person to person saying "Peace be with you" before the stage was set for us. Lyana (the conductor) and I went on stage first, then the rest of them came in. "Putra Putri" was not much of a big deal, but the really entertaning song was "I Will Follow You + Can't Take My Eyes Off You" Whopper Remix. There we showed our prowess !
Immediately after us, was Victoria Institution. For a moment there, they scared us, but then... they proved to be lacklustre. Again. They sang "Dirgahayu" and "Jong Jong Inai". The second song might have been a good track, and they made use of silver confetti and black/yellow fans - probably to add to the Asian flavour in "Jong Jong Inai". After them was Kepong Baru. At that moment in time, the competition began for us. They were a very good match for us (except for the fact that they did not move much). Finally, SMK Sri Sentosa. Bleeeargh. Last place.
When the results were announced, I was confident that CBN - the grade school - would be champs, but I wasn't really sure about us because Kepong Baru was there. Still, I prayed and prayed and continued praying.
Soon after the results were announced, it was photoshoot session, and then lunch break, and then back home.
CBN IS HOT TO GO !
Thank you so much, Lord, for a well-deserving Fete de la Musique.
(Special thanks to Michele and Joaan for the friendship and intense training, as well as Cik Faridah, Pn Hazlina, Pn See Tho, Pn Chee, Mrs Khoo and Pn Hanizah for the extra advice and effort towards the outfit, and all teachers and students for unwavering friendship, love and support towards our cause.
Some may find this post to be deragatory ; do take note that this is the cry of a member. And as all members are, sometimes we can be opinionated. Don't take offence in the stuff I write.)
