Remember what I wrote about my struggles with the 16-beat and such ? One year of dismal show ? I spilled the entire story to Daniel, who then invited me to see his brother play. Now, his brother can even outdo Uncle Cyril - that again, was what people say - and I wondered what it would be like to play that well. I cried.
This morning, I went for 6:45 a.m. mass with dad and Narin because we had to go to hospital to visit mom (in CCU). I did not know which group did the Praise and Worship today, but well... the musicians (except for the pianist and vocalists) matched Sunset Band. And the drummer was awesome. I remember that towards the end of the mass, he did a fast 16-beat for the recessional hymn. I cried.
What, you would start saying that superb drummers make me cry ?
Meanwhile, if I ever do a fast 16-beat or a fast fill like that within six months, I will date - um, feed a monkey.
No, really, I am serious. Someone will just have to take me to the National Zoo. Here I go again...... people just cannot believe that I attempted playing drums last May. And long before this day, i.e. during my first attempt, I hoped to make mom proud with these hands. Now I feel like a total loser.
*Thud.*
Just now Jojo sent me a YouTube vid, and I went to see it. It was this 11-year-old girl called Sara (now she is a familiar face on YouTube already, owing to her prowess on drums) doing a solo which won her first prize in a certain competition. I could only dream of playing that well. Fine, so I may need experience playing in a band but well, they would never want to take a novice like me. And I wonder why. Maybe I am being emo. Maybe I am undermining myself. Or maybe, people want the good person around (duh, who would want sloppy, clangy beats for mass ?).
Ma, I hope you get well soon. I need to tell you this : I know it took you a while before you even decided to get me a drum kit. And I know it took you a long while before you allowed me to even play drums. I ask the Lord to use my hands tonight... Soon, Ma. With these hands, I will make you proud. And I will get there. God willing.
